Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition review: the same as 4 years ago, but on Nintendo Switch

Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition review: the same as 4 years ago, but on Nintendo SwitchA true paradise for fans of fan service, Hyrule Warriors had seduced players with its simple and effective gameplay. If the game hasn't really changed in terms of handling, we can only advise you to watch the test of the game on Wii U to find out more about it. Of course, people who have already played the original will not be surprised by discovering this Definitive Edition, but the presence of 29 characters in the game's roster (from the Wii U and 3DS episodes) should be enough to motivate those who would like to dive back into the game of Koei Tecmo. Knowing that each fighter has his own techniques and attacks, players will have plenty to do and those who found the casting a little light, before, should find their account.

A MORE MORE VERSION?

Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition review: the same as 4 years ago, but on Nintendo SwitchClearly, the developers have been generous enough to please all The Legend of Zelda fans and if that's really not enough for you, know that you'll even be able to control Ganon via a special game mode in which he can free any his power. A real pleasure for any fan of the license, even if we can always rail against the somewhat clumsy gameplay of this mode. The feeling of power is there, but it all comes at the expense of the nervous and ultra-fast gameplay of classic Hyrule Warriors combat. On the other hand, we appreciate the fact that Ganon can call on several special powers (selectable on the fly), each attack benefiting from a staging of its own. In addition to this XXL roster, Koei Tecmo has also thought of adding several maps in the "Adventure" mode. If the latter already offered many hours of additional play to players who have completed Legend mode, you will have to work hard to complete all the available cards. In order not to fall into excessive repetition, each map has its own rules which make the challenge more interesting than it already was. A godsend for the most determined players who would like to unlock all the most powerful weapons in the game. having reached 100%, there are dozens and dozens of hours of play available to you. Between that and Legend mode, which has not changed one iota, players will have plenty to do. Only small downside, it is necessary to advance a minimum in the Legend mode in order to unlock the rest of the content of the game as well as all the characters of the roster. If the neophytes will not be disturbed by this constraint, the other players may blow at the idea of having to stick around again all the Story mode.

PERSISTENT GAPS

Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition review: the same as 4 years ago, but on Nintendo SwitchTo make the experience more fluid, the developers had the good idea to add all the new features present in the 3DS version of Hyrule Warriors. Thus, you can alternate between the different characters present during a fight and give orders to those you do not use. To top it off, the Fairies are also there. In addition to the fact that they bring a significant advantage during the fights, the latter even have the luxury of offering themselves a new 3D display, which brings a little more salt to the clashes of Hyrule Warriors. Once again, players will have something to grind with this feature since these little magical creatures are also customizable. However, although the game's gameplay has been improved, the flaws that we noticed in 2014 are still there. Apart from the repetitive side of the title, the game still suffers from the same camera problems, especially when you have to repeatedly roll and dodge. Same story for the AI of your allies who are still not very useful. Of course, we can give them orders, but if you do not control them yourself, they will not be the most effective. Unfortunately, if you were expecting something new on this side, you failed. However, the game is catching up with the arrival of a real splitscreen coop mode (playable in Portable and Dock mode) which allows two players to unbox monsters together. On the other hand, we advise you to use two controllers, sharing the Joy-Con not being the most pleasant.

Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition review: the same as 4 years ago, but on Nintendo SwitchFinally, how not to mention the graphic aspect of the title. If the Wii U version did not really stick a slap on the retina, this new opus on Nintendo Switch has the merit of being visually finer. In 1080p (Dock mode) or 720p (Portable mode), the game displays sharper textures and aliasing is much less present than before. The game is much smoother, even if some phases put a strain on the framerate, and the various visual effects of the game's attacks are much more impressive than before. On the other hand, the cut-scenes of the game always suffer from some slowdowns that we perceive quite easily. Clearly, the game is much sharper than before, but for all that, you will not be entitled to a colossal graphic leap, unless you have played the game on Nintendo 3DS.
